I am a lifelong healthy living enthusiast and former fitness instructor whose perspective on health and healing took a major shift after I became catastrophically ill for several years due to a combination of botulism and Lyme disease. I became completely bedridden, unable to walk, sit or hold my head up for a year. I required total assistance. The doctors I saw were perplexed because my symptoms fell into a “grey area.” There was not much they could do for me except prescribe me a few medications which were not appropriate for my condition and made my sick body even sicker.
Doctors are not trained well in neurotoxicity and detoxification. The best guidance I got came from a neurologist who very honestly told me she had no idea whether or not I would be able to recover but told me to “believe” I would get well. That proved to be great advice but it was also a turning point for me because I realized that medicine had nothing to offer me and if I was going to get better, I was going to have to do it on my own. So, armed with determination, belief and the ability to do research on a cell phone (about as much weight as my arms could hold), I began a relentless program of recovery. I experimented with diet, detoxification, and countless “alternative therapies,” including hyperbaric oxygen, acupuncture, Rife machines and numerous supplements. I literally had to “feel” my way to recovery guided by the innate intelligence of the body to heal itself given the proper support.
During my recovery process, I came across the excellent nutritional therapy practitioner program offered by the Nutritional Therapy Association. Their approach to health fell in line with everything I had learned about nutrition and healing while I was sick, primarily that a properly prepared, nutrient-dense, real food diet is one of the foundations of optimal health. I became certified as a CNT and now take great pleasure in helping others with their health goals and sharing what I have learned.
